FATHOM is a sound-driven Roblox horror experience set beneath the closed Fathom Amusement park. Start with Story Mode if you want the Chapter 1 investigation and its ending choice. Pick Chase Mode when you want to enter the hunt without following the story sequence. Both choices are built around the same threat: Grinsworth can use movement, chat, and microphone sound to find players.
The safest first-session plan is to learn the interface in a quiet moment, keep the current objective visible, and save the grapple or camera flash for the moment a chase actually begins. FATHOM automatically saves story progress, so a careful run is more valuable than rushing because you think the whole chapter must be completed at once.

What is officially confirmed
The official experience description confirms two named modes. Story Mode is the path for uncovering what happened after Fathom Amusement shut its underground park. Chase Mode skips directly to being hunted. The same description says progress saves automatically and that the experience supports solo play or a group of up to four players.
Grinsworth’s public behavior is unusually specific. He climbs walls, crawls through vents, and hears footsteps, chat, and voice on the microphone. The developer also says players can talk to the monster and receive a response. Exact hearing distance, how long he remembers a sound, and whether each input is treated equally are not publicly documented, so good advice focuses on reducing unnecessary noise rather than pretending there is a fixed safe radius.
Three defensive actions are confirmed. Use the grapple to escape, use the camera flash to blind Grinsworth, and hide in a locker without making sound. Each solves a different problem: the grapple changes position, the flash creates a short interruption, and the locker breaks direct pursuit only if the hiding attempt stays quiet. Check the current prompts for inputs because public pages do not provide a reliable keyboard, controller, and mobile mapping.
A practical first-run route
Before joining, decide whether the group wants story progress or a quick chase. Do not let one player select Story while everyone else expects a short round. If you are using voice, agree on short callouts and a moment when the group will go silent. A sound-reactive enemy turns ordinary conversation into a gameplay choice.
After loading, read the current objective and identify which tools the run has actually given you. Do not assume a pass item is available in every mode, and do not spend a camera flash just to test the visual effect. Locate a retreat direction before interacting with an objective so the first appearance of Grinsworth does not force an unplanned dead end.
During pursuit, choose one escape answer. Grapple when a valid route can pull you away. Flash when Grinsworth is close enough for the camera to matter and you need a moment to move. Use a locker when you can enter without leading the threat directly into a noisy group. Stacking every tool at once leaves no answer for the next chase.
After the danger passes, regroup at a recognizable location and reread the objective. FATHOM’s public material does not promise that every item, enemy path, or objective location is fixed. A teammate’s route can be helpful without being universal. Treat the live objective and current environment as the authority for that run.
Story, endings, and completion goals
Chapter 1 has a general completion badge plus two choice badges: Go Home and Go Deeper. Their official descriptions prove that the chapter presents a meaningful branch, but they do not document the exact selection point or whether a completed player can replay only the ending. If you care about a particular badge, watch the on-screen choice carefully and avoid clicking through the final prompt.
The Untouchable badge requires finishing Chapter 1 without losing a life. Plan that as a separate clean-run goal after learning the chapter. The public badge description does not explain how revives, teammate deaths, Infinite Lives, or reconnects affect eligibility. A first blind run is better used to learn danger points and tool timing than to assume a perfect-clear condition.
Build a team that can stay quiet
For two to four players, assign simple responsibilities rather than formal classes. One player reads the objective, one keeps track of the retreat path, and whoever has a defensive tool calls when it is used. Everyone should understand that chat and microphone input may be heard by Grinsworth; repeated instructions can be more dangerous than a short agreed signal.
Solo players gain control over pace and noise but lose extra eyes and recovery help. Move deliberately, stop before committing to an interaction, and keep one escape option available. Multiplayer can make searching faster, yet a scattered group creates more footsteps and makes it harder to tell which sound drew the monster.
Use purchases only after learning the base loop
FATHOM offers optional passes, including Radar, Night Vision Goggles, Stronger Grapple, Starter Pack, Infinite Lives, Shove, VIP, and Survivor Bundle. Their official descriptions explain benefits, but ownership does not replace route knowledge. Radar and Night Vision are explicitly disabled in Nightmare, while Shove is described as continuing to work there.
Learn at least one normal Story or Chase session before deciding what problem a pass should solve. If navigation is the issue, compare Radar. If darkness is the issue, review Night Vision. If a group repeatedly runs out of basic supplies, examine the Starter Pack or bundle. The Passes hub separates permanent tools, per-run supplies, convenience, and cosmetic benefits.
Keep changing facts separate from core rules
Prices, badge award rates, active events, and the game’s update timestamp can change without warning. The pages here attach check dates to those values and link back to Roblox. Core statements such as the experience identity, creator, named modes, and public tool descriptions still deserve a recheck after a major update.
Chapter 2 has an official Roblox event entry, but a scheduled event page is not the same as a completed playable chapter. Use the Updates page for the current first-party status. Continue to use the Chapter 1 guides until the live experience and creator announcement show that the new content is available.
